Once upon a time
The Kerr farm has been part of the heritage of Argenteuil County since the 1830s. Initially extending over several hundred acres, the farm was in operation until 1950 producing meat, wool, vegetables and other farm products for local and regional markets. In 1917, the farm began to welcome families of vacationers looking for country getaways and good homemade meals with farm flavors. A shuttle service takes vacationers, mainly from Montreal, from the Lachute train station to the farm for summer stays of several weeks. Having no vehicle, residents benefit from a general store on site, and thus, the farm was transformed into a real vacation resort. Campfires, horseshoe and tennis tournaments, Lake Hughes beach, dance party, so many activities to entertain young and old.
Following the creation of the road accommodating automobiles to Morin-Height and the economic crisis of 1929 which severely affected the Canadian agricultural sector, the Kerr farm extended its tourist offer by building an extension to the main house, comprising additional bedrooms and a large dining room that can seat up to 60 people. The tourist offer continued to develop over the century, going from the reception of numerous weddings, to the construction of a maple grove and mini-cottages, to the rental of tents to be installed on the vast grounds of the property. The clientele of Montreal families gradually gave way to a more international clientele, coming from the United States and even France. However, locals continued to frequent the space, especially for dinner on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
The tourist and agricultural vocation of the farm has gradually dissipated over the past 20 years, and the infrastructures of the various buildings have been left behind. Since acquiring the farm in 2020, the new owner, Steve Vachon, has set out to restore its former image to this Gore Township heritage. He carried out several works within the buildings and the grounds and thought up a project divided into several components taking up and refining activities of the last century, to position itself as a tourist attraction while promoting the products of the region.
